Studying the Masters

Studying the Masters is a live, online class developed with the aspiring musical writer in mind. Whether you’re a first-time writer and want to see what musical structure is all about, or a seasoned writer and want to learn from the greats, this course is for you. Study and examine the structure of traditional and contemporary book musicals including Cabaret, Camelot, Next to Normal, Spring Awakening, and more!

  • Attend online from wherever you are! All classes will be held in a live, online Zoom class setting.
  • You’ll receive access to the librettos and scores of the shows we’re studying to review before each session.
  • Active participation is encouraged! Feel free to ask questions or comment during class.

About Your Instructor

Cate Cammarata

Cate Cammarata is an Off-Broadway producer, director, and dramaturg specializing in the development of new plays and musicals. She is the Literary Manager at Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) and the Associate Artistic Director of Rhymes Over Beats Hip Hop Theater Collective. Cate also teaches classes in Dramaturgy and Play Analysis at SUNY Stony Brook and Baruch College, teaches musical writing workshops in NYC and works with writers on script development and self-producing.
