So it’s been feast or famine in my email box this week. A feast of emails from retailers, businesses and organizations about their policies on COVID-19. And a famine of emails from my business clients and vendors.
A little scary.
I know many of you are in the same boat. We’re past the initial scurry to find the appropriate response to this illness. We know what we have to do. We’re appropriately in our homes, on social lockdown, perhaps with a slight fear seeping in through the cracks of our doors.
So as we practice self-quarantining and social distancing, let’s agree it’s not good to live in total isolation. Isolation is a fertile breeding ground for the “Whatifs”….
Last night, while I lay thinking here
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
And pranced and partied all night long
And sang their same old Whatif song….
(followed by a long list of scary things!!!)
~Shel Silverstein
I don’t want to hear from the Whatifs. I need an encouraging voice from someone with skin on.
You too? Then pay it forward.
Reach out.
Call a friend.
Skype a family member.
Send an email to check on a colleague.
I just called my parents and my sister, and then reached out to a couple of theatre colleagues around the world. Here’s one response I received:
“Omg!!! ? thank you so much for checking in!”
It might surprise someone that you’re thinking of them during this time. And it could be the morsel of hope that gets them through today.
So I’ll leave you with one of my favorite songs, and I know that we’ll get back to these old, familiar places soon…
I’ll be seeing you in all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces all day through
In that small cafe, the park across the way
The children’s carousel, the chestnut trees, the wishing well
I’ll be seeing you in every lovely summer’s day
In everything that’s light and gay — I’ll always think of you that way
I’ll find you in the morning’ sun and when the night is new
I’ll be looking at the moon but I’ll be seeing you
In the meantime….
Much love,
Stay healthy,
Be responsible,
and stay in touch.
